Philipp Hummel is the Team Lead "Information" at the National Center for Charging Infrastructure of the federally owned NOW GmbH.

Vita

I left journalism in November 2018. Afterwards I worked as a Public & Media Relations Officer at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam. Since July 2020, I have been working at the National Centre for Charging Infrastructure, currently as Team Lead „Information“. I am not available for journalistic assignments at the moment.

Located in Berlin, my particular journalistic interest lied in the pitfalls of science relevant to society. I have published original stories on the harmful potential of Tasers, plans for a dialect detection software aimed at determining the origin of asylum seekers in Germany, and that one time a hacker contacted me which finally brought down the world’s most important hub for science news.

My customers included Süddeutsche Zeitung, Neue Zürcher Zeitung, Technology ReviewDer Spiegel, Spiegel Online, and spektrum.de.

From September 2016 through March 2017, I was a Science Editor at Die Welt and Welt am Sonntag. From April 2015 I have been part of a cross-border investigation for the project „Hearing Voices“ on speaker identification in lawsuits and language analysis on asylum seekers, supported by the journalismfund.eu.

From 2003, I studied physics and the big city life in Berlin with excursions to philosophy, sociology, and the history of science and technology. I was born in 1984 in the rural Black Forest region in the southwest of Germany, where I also grew up. After my diploma in biophysics, I decided to become a science journalist and applied successfully for the mentoring program of Initiative Wissenschaftsjournalismus.
